The Size of Stroke and Bevel is dictated by the size of your Type. This effect does not work for small type. Size Matters. Don’t forget to group the Layer with itself (Cmd or Ctrl + G) and change the blend mode of the group to “Normal” at the end.

COLOUR YOUR TEXT A NEUTRAL GREY

Pick a neutral grey colour I use HSB 0/0/60 which is 60% grey. Or RGB 153, 153, 153.

ADD A LIGHT GREY STROKE

Double-click a blank part of the layer, or go to Layer>Layer Style>Stroke

Set the size of your stroke to match the size of your font.

STRUCTURE

Size: To match the size of the font here I chosen 25px

Position: Centre

Blend Mode: Linear Dodge (Add)

Overprint: Ticked

FILL TYPE: Colour: HSB 192/3/65 (light grey). Or RGB 161, 165, 166

ADD A STROKE EMBOSS WITH BEVEL AND EMBOSS

STRUCTURE

Style: Stroke Emboss

Technique: Smooth

Depth: 344% Keep your eye on the small preview on the panel as you increase the depth.

Direction: Up

Size: The same as the size of the stroke, or slightly higher. Here I’ve chosen 35px, 10px higher than the stroke.

Soften: 0

SHADING

Angle: 85 degrees

Altitude: 26 degrees

Gloss Contour: Ring Contour

Highlight Mode: Linear Dodge (Add)

Opacity: 79% – for White

Shadow Mode: Linear Burn

Opacity: 38% – for Black

Keep the size of the Bevel in the same region as the size of the stroke. I normally make the Bevel size a little larger than the Stroke. Using the Gloss Contour of “Ring Contour” seems to work best.

CONTOUR — ADD A RING CONTOUR (OPTIONAL)

This is optional as it can be over-the-top and not always needed.

ELEMENTS

Contour: Ringa

Range: 50%

With Contour use Ring Contour. I’ve used a range of 50% if you do change it keep your eye on the preview. Contour Bevel and Emboss use Ring Contour and 50% Range

ADD A SILVER GRADIENT OVERLAY

Pick your Gradient by going to the drop-down arrow at the right of the Gradient and then click the Cog symbol and choose Metals. Then Choose Silver.

Add a Silver Gradient Overlay

Try and match these settings

GRADIENT

Blend Mode: Linear Dodge (Add).

Opacity: 39%

Gradient: Silver

Align with Layer: Ticked

Style: Diamond

Angle: 60 degrees

Scale: 88%

Add a Silver Gradient Overlay using Linear Dodge (Add), 39% Opacity, Diamond Style, sixty degrees angle.

PATTERN OVERLAY

Adobe in 2020 seems to have removed the Artists Surfaces which has the Granite Texture. If you can’t find it try a Canvas pattern.

The reason I add a pattern is just to give it a bit of texture as the effect tends to look like Chrome.

Click the drop-down arrow at the right edge of Pattern then click the Cog symbol and choose “Artists Surfaces“. Then pick “Granite“. Play around with the Scale to get the effect you want.

PATTERN OVERLAY

Blend Mode: Multiply

Opacity: 41%

Pattern: Granite

Scale: 85%

Link with Layer: Ticked.

DROP SHADOW

Don’t worry too much about the Drop Shadow. The shadow just helps give it some more pizazz.

STRUCTURE

Blend Mode: Multiply

Opacity: 50%

Angle: 112 Degrees

Distance: 49px

Spread: 0%

Size: 39px

QUALITY

Contour: Linear

Noise: 0%

Layer Knocks Out Drop Shadow: Ticked.
